An expert's opinion

'Original' is the right word to describe a wine that is in parts Burgundy, Bordeaux and the Rhone altogether, made from their famous white grapes; Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. To get these delicious combinations of flavours, you need to head to the Languedoc and in this case, to Nebian on the borders of Herault. I love this rich, mineral and tasty white wine. When Le Petit Ballon first began, I fell in love with this estate for their red wines and I'm delighted to say their white is just as good!

The estate

Domaine Bérénas

This estate has everything a great producer in the Languedoc could want and yet, in 2013, the premature death of its head wine-maker, Christophe, rocked the winery to its core. Luckily, Christophe's best friends took over the estate to ensure that his lifes work didn't disappear and forged ahead in his memory. The quality and character of the wines is unchanged and this beautiful story of friendship, sharing and love is something to raise a glass to. To Christophe!

  • Eye The wine has a beautiful, fresh colour that suggests vibrancy and freshness

  • Nose On the nose there's beautiful aromatic complexity with all three grapes contributing something different. Honey, white flowers, ripe stone fruits, citrus and a touch of chalky minerality to signal its unique terroir. Lovely!

  • Mouth On the palate this is richer than expected, with a great flavour intensity. Honey, stone fruits and white flowers are immediately obvious, finishing with an almost saline touch.
