An expert's opinion

A hymn to syrah!

It was through my friend and colleague, Philippe Faure Brac, that I found this wine from Lirac. Not in his restaurant Bistrot du Sommelier, but in the Duseigneur area where he shares the destiny of the area with Bernard Duseigneur. L'Astrolabe comes from Syrah vines of almost 50 years, on a plot with complex soils found in the municipality of Saint Laurent des Arbres. The result is simply amazing: a rich and complex wine, a true hymn to Syrah. Over the top!

Jean-Michel Deluc. Head Sommelier of Petit Ballon.
The estate

Domaine Duseigneur

Everything starts at the top of the hill, where the father of Bernard, Duseigneur Jean, settled in the 1960s. They have traditionally focused on preservation of their lands, their soil and their vines. They engaged in biodynamic farming from 2004 onwards and all the conditions were meant there was a perfect balance between land, vine and environment. Today, Philippe FaureBrac, one of the Best Sommeliers in the world, accompanies Bernard in choosing their blends and assemblages. That's quite special, don't you think?

  • Eye The colour is so intense that it goes from blue-black to purple. The wine is imposing, dense and concentrated.

  • Nose On the nose the wine expresses real complexity, with notes of black fruits, spices, tobacco, red flowers, liquorice and peppermint.

  • Mouth In the mouth this is fleshy and voluptuous; pure velvet, relayed by a beautiful freshness of mint and liquorice. The finish is lovely and full of fine, silky tannins.
