An expert's opinion

It is at Paul Prieur & Fils that I have been getting Sancerre for ages, both for the Ritz or for my own cellar. Until now it's always been white wines, because for me, Sancerre is synonymous with white wine. Then this "Les Pichons" 2014 vintage came along which offers a nice fruity, velvety material and a surprising minerality. And voilà, here is another wine of Prieur that will enter my cellar. Only red this time.

Jean-Michel Deluc. Head Sommelier of Petit Ballon.
The estate

Domaine Paul Prieur & Fils

Paul Prieur is synonymous with renewal for the wines of Sancerre. He is among the first to have valued his bottled production and to bear the name of Sancerre in fairs across France. Since 2013, it is Luc, his grandson, who is at the head of the estate. He looks after the vineyards with love and respect for tradition, to the rhythm of the bagpipes played by his uncle

  • Eye The wine has a rather soft ruby color with violet nuances of youth, and suggests a very early evolution on the side of the glass.

  • Nose The nose is fine and delicately scented with aromas of cherry, blackcurrant, blueberry, and liqourice and mint after aeration. The minerality is underlying.

  • Mouth The attack is supple and greedy, with the same flavours of red and black fruits, and balances on a fresh and crunchy structure. A bold wine on the length
